A speaker since seventh grade
Tom began speaking in public more than half a century ago. In seventh and eighth grades, he won speech contests across the NYC area. He was named valedictorian of his elementary school class and delivered its commencement speech.
At New York University, Tom studied Broadcast Journalism and was a newscaster, talk show host, and jazz DJ at student-run WNYU-FM. While still in college, he became a freelance radio reporter for Mutual News and its affiliate WHN-AM. He graduated as the top student in his NYU Broadcast Journalism class and was inducted into the Kappa Tau Alpha Journalism Honor Society.
An Emmy Award at “The Tiffany Network”
Even before graduation, Tom was working at CBS as a writer and producer for the CBS Morning News, Nightwatch (the first overnight network newscast), and Channel 2 News on flagship station WCBS-TV. He won an Emmy Award for producing coverage of the trial that served as New York State’s test case for cameras in the courtroom.
Promoted to Weekend Producer, Tom supervised all personnel, operations, and broadcasts on Saturdays and Sundays. After two years, he left to pursue his dream of reporting on-camera.
Award-winning journalist
Tom has been an anchor, weathercaster, and investigative reporter. Just two years into his on-camera career, he became the first journalist ever to win two Edward R. Murrow Awards in the same year from the Radio Television News Directors Association (RTNDA), considered among the most prestigious awards in television journalism. He also won the Enterprise Reporting Award from the Chesapeake Associated Press.
Shortly after joining WAVY-TV in Virginia, Tom covered the Oklahoma City bombing in April 1995. Two years later, RTNDA honored him again with a Regional Award for Investigative Reporting, and the following year he won the AP’s award for “Outstanding Effort by an Individual Reporter” in Virginia. During his five years with “10 On Your Side,” his investigative reports were featured several times on the nationally syndicated “Montel Williams Show.”
Top performer, trainer, and innovator
After his award-winning TV news career, Tom moved into pharmaceutical sales, where he repeatedly earned top performance recognition at multiple companies. His expressive, engaging style helped him achieve IMPACT with customers in presentations of every length, for many different audiences, in a wide range of situations.
As a District and National Sales Trainer, Tom helped colleagues raise their performance. He delivered Presentation Skills Workshops for field-sales teams and advised senior leadership on important presentations. His passion for helping others excel extends to teaching skiing, sailing, windsurfing, and rollerblading.
Tom also played a leading role in his company’s first-ever Virtual Sales Meeting, years before COVID-19. The project won an internal award for innovation and cost savings, and prepared him well for the sudden shift to remote work during the pandemic.
